Designed by Benjamin Dimson, the 964 marked a significant evolution for the iconic 911 on its launch in 1989, with first-time features such as all-wheel drive.
Building on the introductory Carrera 2 and 4 models, the arrival of the Carrera RS to the European market in 1992 saw the first use of the celebrated ‘RennSport’ badge since the 2.7 RS almost 20 years previously.
Whilst the stripped-back, performance-focused approach appeared to divide opinion amongst journalists at first, the 964 RS Lightweight has since become one of the most desirable 911 variants today, with our ultra-low mileage, ‘Grand Prix White’ LHD car a stunning example of this most pure machine.

Unsurprisingly, the RS was rear-wheel-drive only and featured a revised version of the 3.6-litre M64 engine, that had been newly launched for the 964 range, with an increased power output of 260bhp.
The RS model featured a lightweight flywheel, an upgraded gearbox and an asymmetrical limited slip differential. The suspension was tuned with a lower ride height, stiffer springs and shock absorbers as well as adjustable anti-roll bars.
To save yet more weight, the interior was also stripped of most extras, leaving a comfortable yet basic cabin, whilst an aluminium bonnet, magnesium wheels and thinner door and rear window glass left the RS over 150kg lighter than the Carrera 2 model. A Touring version of the RS was offered with several of the more essential interior items retained, whilst the Clubsport offered an even more track focused roadgoing option.
Manufactured at the Porsche Stuttgart factory, our LHD car was delivered new to Centro Porsche Milano in Italy and first registered on 27 November 1992 before passing through several owners in the country, including a family member of a celebrated fashion house.
The car was purchased by the current owner in 2017 and imported to the UK earlier this year, since when it has received an MOT and has been registered for UK road use.
Displaying a remarkably low 26,809km (16,650 miles), this 964 has evidently seen very little use throughout all previous ownerships and remains a highly original, unmolested Lightweight. All the major mechanical components are believed to have been untouched since leaving the factory and the original ‘Grand Prix White’ paint and black interior remain in pristine condition, resulting in a ‘time capsule’ example of this sought-after car.
Long considered a true purist’s car, the 964 RS has been mainstay of the track day scene since its launch in the early 1990s. Accordingly original, low-mileage examples such as ours are particularly rare.
The first model to wear the RS badge since the 1973 2.7 RS, the 964 perfectly toes the line between the high performance of its iconic predecessors and much more usable, touring ability of modern machinery, perfectly at home on-track as on cross-continent adventures.
With only 2,282 cars produced, the 964 RS represents probably the best value of all the RS models, whilst the recent eligibility for import to the US market (now being over 25 years old) can only increase global demand.
Less garish than some of the more exotic paint options offered such as the familiar ‘Rubystone’, our ‘Grand Prix White’ car stands with understated elegance, mirroring the simplicity of its design. Considering its originality and low mileage, this 964 RS must be one of the best examples for sale today.
