Design

Introduced as a 1994 year model, the 993 brought a fresh new style to the iconic 911 form. More significantly, underneath the shapely new body were fundamental enhancements to its structure, drivetrain and suspension.

Such a large advance technically required a new look for the Porsche 911 and the design team, headed by then Head of Porsche Style, Harm Lagaay, were not afraid of changing it.

British designer, Tony Hatter, is credited as designing the 993.  Hatter’s goal was to create a more cohesive shape, adding tension and muscle, yet retaining the iconic 911 look.

Smoother integration of the front and rear bumpers, aerodynamically shaped wing mirrors and the 993’s signature lower front wings dramatically evolved the 911’s lines, without disregarding its lineage.

The 993 still remains contemporaneous in its looks today. The model is really the bridge between the earliest air-cooled and current 911s, representing a unique point in the history of the 911.
