details

CEV205B is an original 1964 MG B Roadster built in January 1964. The car has an extensive period racing history and is prepared for historic motorsport with an FIA HTP valid until 2028. It is eligible for a host of race series and events.

The car was bought in 1965 by amateur racer Rob Shellard and converted for racing by Bill Nicholson, probably the pre-eminent private preparer of MGBs at the time. It was a strong performer and Shellard was generally amongst the fastest MGBs on the club racing scene in the 1960s. He raced the car prolifically between 1965 and early 1970 in a variety of club and national races at venues including Brands Hatch, Silverstone, Snetterton, Crystal Palace and Thruxton. Shellard’s exploits in the car are documented in the reference work “MGB, The Racing Story” written by John Baggott.

Shellard sold CEV205B in 1970 to John Cotton, another front-running club racer who campaigned it for the following two seasons. It was then sold and disappeared until 1984
when it was rediscovered by Shellard. He bought his old race car back with the intention of restoring it. Shellard got quite a long way into this project between 1985 and 1988 however sadly he was never able to finish the car.

Subsequent owners David Harding and then Kelvin Jones completed Shellard’s restoration to a high standard. A new MG Motorsport race engine and gearbox were fitted in 2016 and Jones entered the car in Equipe GTS and CSCC Swinging Sixties events in that year.

The car was sold to the current owner in 2017

This is a smart little car that drives exactly as expected and will surely tick many boxes for the next owner. We are rather envious of that person!
Our thoughts

We are often asked what we think is the ideal starter historic racing car. Our answer is, if not an early 911, then an MGB built to the highest standards and, ideally, with period history. These cars tick all the boxes: strong, safe, quick, eligible and cost-effective.

The price premium for meaningful period history is really slight given that it enables you to put yourself ahead of the pack of new build cars. There aren’t many better value ways of gaining an invitation to the Goodwood Revival.
