details

This Porsche 1970 911S 2.2 was supplied in May 1970 through Porsche Switzerland.  It is presented in its original colour combination of Blood Orange exterior and black vinyl interior and is numbers matching.  The car is highly original with factory paint finish still evident in several places and a lovely patinated interior complete with factory Recaro sports seats still in their original covers.

The car spent the first 30 years of its life in Switzerland with three different owners.  It was maintained for much of this period by the same classic car specialist near Montreux.  It was then purchased by a well-known British Porsche enthusiast and event organiser, who imported the car to the UK in 2000.  He commissioned a refurbishment at Sportwagen, one of the leading Porsche restorers in Europe.  The car was sold to the current UK owner in 2005.

The car is in excellent condition having been regularly maintained by a respected classic Porsche specialist in North London;  the car has now covered an indicated 131,000 kms (82,000 miles) and benefits from extensive fettling by Sports Purpose in conjunction with Heritage Autowerks.

It’s hard to think of a 911 that is more evocative of Porsche at its zenith.
Our thoughts

A question we often find ourselves debating is “which 911 is the best?”.

A contender for “thinking man’s choice” would have to be the 2.2S.  Made for only two years, it is a perfect mixture of the simplicity of the original 911 with the technology that was evolving from the factory’s world beating racing programme at the end of the 1960s.

No spoilers, narrow rear arches and skinny 6” wheels left Butzi Porsche’s masterpiece of design unadulterated.  However, a high-revving, fuel-injected short stroke engine made from magnesium with a dog-leg five speed gearbox gives the 2.2S serious driver appeal.

As one of the leading lights of the British Porsche scene (himself the owner of a fabulous 2.2S) said, “If Alfa Romeo had made a 911, it would have had all the qualities of the 2.2S”.

Overarching that is pure Porsche bloodline.  Porsche’s legendary 917 race drivers - Siffert, Elford and Oliver amongst them - were each given a 2.2S to travel between European races.  And, of course, Steve McQueen drove his own 2.2S in the opening credits of the cult movie Le Mans.  It’s hard to think of a 911 that is more evocative of Porsche at its zenith.

Today, the car drives as crisply as you would hope:  equally at home on the autobahn, around Town or on a cross-country mission, it embodies everything that we love in a 911.  This particular car, in one of our favourite Porsche colours, is truly a fine example of a special model.
