model history

The Porsche 911 Carrera RS 2.7, introduced in 1972 for the 1973 model year, is one of the most iconic and sought-after 911 models ever built. Designed as a homologation special for Group 4 racing, it featured a 2.7-liter flat-six engine producing 210 horsepower, allowing for a 0-60 mph time of around 5.5 seconds.

Key features included lightweight construction, wider rear fenders to accommodate larger tires, and the now-famous ducktail rear spoiler, which improved aerodynamics and high-speed stability. Available in Touring (M472) and Lightweight (M471) versions, the RS 2.7 balanced performance with usability.

With only 1,508 road-going units produced, it remains a rare collector's item. Revered for its engaging driving characteristics and close association with Porsche’s racing programme, the Carrera RS 2.7 is often considered one of the greatest air-cooled 911s ever built, setting the foundation for future RS-badged Porsches.

this car

Chassis 9113600297 was delivered in Touring specification via Dick Lovett Specialist Cars in February 1973, specified in Grand Prix White / Blue with Black Leatherette/Corduroy interior, heated rear window, Recaro seats, driver’s door mirror, electric windows and seat belts. The car maintains its matching numbers engine and gearbox and with production completed in December 1972, this is one of the first 500 examples, built using thinner and lighter steel body panels.

The car passed through the hands of 5 owners before being purchased by a Mr George Evans through Hexagon Classics in 1983 at which point the car had 68,000 miles on the clock. Mr Evans kept the car for 25 years during which time he raced and toured the car extensively also carrying out engine and gearbox rebuilds and also a bare metal respray in this time. His travels with the car are documented within the history file, including visiting the watch museums in Switzerland.

The current owner purchased the car in 2013 and has spent large sums carrying out full engine and gearbox rebuilds as well as a bare shell repaint. Some of the top Porsche specialists in the country working on the car including BS Motorsport and Maxted-Page. As a result, it presents very smartly and is driving extremely well.

Our thoughts

Wearing its 50 years age lightly, the 911 2.7 RS remains one of the greatest of all Porsche’s iterations of the model, a clear highlight in the model history and one which every enthusiast wishes to own or experience at some point.

In 1973 the RS must have seemed ballistically fast given what else it was sharing the road with. Today there are plenty of much quicker cars however there are few that would reward the driver as much. That is because the RS has just the right mix of power, weight and grip for the driving opportunities that most of us can expect to encounter.

This particular 911 appeals exactly because of its usable nature. No garage queen, it has been used properly throughout its life and is ready for the next adventure.
