details
The Porsche 911 Carrera 3.0 was introduced in the 1976 model year for a relatively short two-year production run of 3,691 cars. In 1976 it sat at the top of the normally aspirated range of 911s, evolving from the preceding 1974 2.7 Carrera and 1973 Carrera RS 2.7 models. Porsche took advantage of their new 3 litre engine designed for the recently introduced Turbo model, which was based on a more robust aluminium crankcase. In non-turbo form it produced a reliable and torquey 200 hp while complying with more stringent emissions regulation. The Carrera 3.0 was slightly less powerful than the outgoing car, but it had greater mid-range punch and the same 1,120 kg kerb weight, so the result was equally impressive performance.
This car was delivered to its first owner in London, who clearly treasured it as he kept it for the next 38 years. The colour may have had something to do with it as the striking Ice Green Metallic exterior was the very same shade chosen by Ferry Porsche for several of his own cars. It is complimented by a smart Black Watch tartan interior, so evocative of the period. As evidenced by plenty of service bills and MoT certificates, the car was regularly used and well maintained under the first owner’s stewardship.
The car changed hands briefly for the first time in 2014 before being acquired by the current owner shortly thereafter. After four decades on British roads there were the inevitable corrosion issues to be dealt with, so he entrusted the car to well-known marque expert, Steve Winter of Jaz Porsche, for a full bare metal restoration, including engine and gearbox rebuilds. Every aspect of the car was addressed and the whole process took over four years to complete. There are photographic records of the car before, during and after the restoration and invoices for the work undertaken are on file. The car has travelled less than 3,000 miles since and still presents in unmarked, concours condition today.
